Port Adelaide is an historic Adelaide suburb founded in 1836 and located 13 km n-w of the CBD. As Adelaide’s main port it handles much of the state’s produce of wine, grains, ores and motor vehicles. Originally named Port Misery because of its mosquito infested swamplands, it is today being transformed from its early working class roots. Bounded on the north and west by the Port Adelaide River & Inner Harbour, the south is devoted to residences. Fisherman’s Wharf Market and Torrens Island Open Market held here each Sunday.
Visitor Information Centre: 18 King William St. Tel (08) 8303 2220 or 1300 655 276.
